Essential Questions:
Why is Digital Citizenship important?
How can I model and promote Digital Citizenship?

Research to Consider:
  • Teaching students about digital citizenship prepares students to be responsible global citizens and how to use technology strategically for this purpose (Ribble, 2012).
  • All digital issues (e.g., sexting, cyberbullying, privacy) are ultimately related, and the reality of students’ cyber lives means teaching digital citizenship holistically and not just as cyber issues come up (Ohler, 2011).
  • One study showed that “47% of high school students admitted to copying and pasting from the Web” but didn’t consider it cheating (Bunyi, 2010).
  • In today’s marketplace, content that our students create and share online is “becoming the new CV” (Richardson and Mancabelli, 2013).

Essential Questions:
Why is collaboration an important disposition to develop?
How can I model and promote collaboration?

Research to Consider:
  • Collaboration and messaging on Google docs or other messaging technologies allow teachers to sustain shared synchronous teacher-student interactions that facilitate an in-depth understanding of student needs (Velasquez et al., 2013).
  • “Online collaboration contributes to improved graduation rates and other academic improvements,” allowing students to connect with a much wider audience than the face-to-face interactions in their own classrooms (Project RED, 2010).
  • Students in one study agreed that the “diversity and creativity” offered by working in peer groups far outweighed that which is attainable when working alone (Chao and Lo, 2011).
  • Researchers argue that collaborative writing, such as using services like Google Docs, “is one of the very few forms of group work that can prove to be as important to students’ work after college” as it is in their current classrooms (Vens, 2011).

Essential Questions:
Why is critical thinking an important disposition to develop?
How can I model and promote critical thinking?

Research to Consider:
  • “Providing opportunities for students to design and implement their own investigations” can be challenging, but it offers student an opportunity to take part in what is done in the world beyond the classroom walls (Dorph et al., 2011).
  • Conducting research about topics that interest students results in student-investment in the work and the use of higher-order thinking skills to integrate new and prior knowledge (Heckenlaible, 2008).
  • The urgency of using traditional skills such as distinguishing sources and understanding plagiarism have become heightened due to the overwhelming amounts of information available on the web (Microsoft Education Team, 2010).
  • The ability to solve problems and challenges enables young learners to develop the skills to enter a flexible workforce and compete in a global market (Gresham, 2014).

Essential Questions:
Why is communication an important disposition to develop?
How can I model and promote communication?

Research to Consider:
  • Digital communication increases student engagement by connecting them with a broader “real world” audience and encouraging collaboration (Pew Research, 2013).
  • One of the most potentially powerful tools is in-class formative assessments that provide real-time feedback on what students know and understand (Technology Counts Report, 2014).
  • Students who collaborate in online spaces to provide feedback “learn from each other, improve their work, and develop their skills,” making such interactions beneficial to students of all ability levels (Thomas, 2011).
  • Students in one study agreed that the “diversity and creativity” offered by working in peer groups far outweighed that which is attainable when working alone (Chao and Lo, 2011).
  • Students can now compose messages without knowing sound-symbol relationships; rather, they can speak and have their message recorded and then sent as a message, allowing them to participate in social media and communicate with others at even younger ages (Barone, 2012).

Essential Questions:
Why is creativity an important disposition to develop?
How can I model and promote creativity?

Research to Consider:
  • In an increasingly automated world, skills such as creativity, synthesis, and problem solving will be in great demand in the workplace (Pew Research Center, 2014).
  • Research indicates that the use of both words and pictures “lets the brain process more information in working memory” (SEG Research, 2008).
  • According to a report from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills: “Many of the fastest-growing jobs and emerging industries rely on workers’ creative capacity - the ability to think unconventionally, question the herd, imagine new scenarios, and produce astonishing work.”
